During his campaign schedule in Kisoro district, the NRM flag bearer and incumbent President Museveni commissioned the 3.1million litres per day Nkanka water supply system on Monday January 4, 2021.
The Nkanka water supply system is set to improve access to safe clean water in Kisoro municipality, Nyarubuye Sub County, Bunagana Border town, parts of Nyakinama SubCounty and the surrounding areas.
The source of water is the Nkanka Mega Spring which flows at 6.3million litres/hr located in Nyarubuye, Sub County-Kisoro District. The system pumps 3.1 million litres/ day and is powered by 33KV grid electricity as primary source and 250KVA diesel generator as backup.
The water flow is pumped to Ruko Hill into a twin tank system with storage of 260,000 litres, it then flows by gravity from Ruko Hill to three main distribution pipe lines in Ruko to Kisoro Municipality, Ruko to Bunagana boarder and Ruko to Nyarusiza/Muramba Sub Counties.
Upon completion, over 17 villages in 3 parishes of Gitenderi, Rukongi, Gisozi- Nyarusiza, Muramba Sub Counties and the surrounding areas near Mgahinga National Park will also benefit from the ongoing water mains extension by February 2021.
The upgrade of Seseme booster station from the current 15,0000litres per hour to 45,000litres per hour and pump water to a new 270,000litre tank at Gishegera hills is also a work in progress and it will boost water supply in Kisoro Municipality and extend services to Nyundo Sub County
Kisoro is one of the water-stressed districts in Uganda, with 40% coverage. Water is concentrated in the northern and eastern parts of the district.
Water scarcity has contributed greatly on community trespass to Mgahinga National park as people constantly sneak into the protected area in search for water.
This has over time become a major conflict area between park management and the people neighboring it.
In the past, women from villages could trek long distances in search for water which strained families. It became a centre of marital conflict because the husbands suspected their wives of dishonesty whenever they delayed while fetching water from far away points.
Other ongoing works;
Upgrade of Seseme booster station from the current 15,0000litres per hour to 45,000litres per hour and pump water to a new 270,000litre tank at Gishegera hills. This will boost water supply in Kisoro municipality and extend services to Nyundo Sub County.
NWSC is implementing other water and Sewerage projects in Fort Portal, Gulu, Arua, Lira, Isingiro, Parambo, Adjumani, Moyo, Nebbi, Koboko, Lugazi, Masaka, Kampala Soroti many other areas of operation.
