The government has increased the salaries of all teachers and local government employees

The Government of Uganda has announced a salary increase for its employees including local government employees, secondary and primary teachers, school principals and others.

The program has started with the 2026/2027 financial year

The Ministry of Public Service has been allocated shs 9 trillion and 708 billion in this year’s budget, to pay salaries of employees.

The cut was from the Rs 8.621 trillion received in the last fiscal year 2025/2

Overall, the government increased the salaries of its employees by shs 1.87 trillion, shs 922.49 crore.

The Minister of State for Public Service, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, said the government has increased the salaries of its employees from Rwf4.200 trillion in the 2018/2029 fiscal year to Rwf9.708 trillion this year 2026/2

Minister Gen Katumba Wamala said the first employees to benefit from the salary increase are the deputy chiefs of staff of districts, town councils and municipalities called Deputy CAOs, and deputy city town clerks.

Others include deputy commissioners in various ministries, young government officers at the officer U2 level, secondary and primary school principals and their deputies, secondary school Arts teachers, and all primary teachers.

Others include heads of TVET teaching institutions, arts teachers, instructors and tutors who assist students and others.

The government has also increased the salaries of ferry operators, and all other employees working on goverment ferries including cargo loaders, ticket operators, surgeons, mortuary workers, X-Ray attendants in governemnt hospitals will also be increased.

Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, said more staff would be added in the next fiscal year 2027/28 budget, and that the government in that year also aims to establish a Pension Fund for civil servants, which will help save millions of dollars for employees.

Minister Katumba said the government would pay 10% of the salary of the employees and they would also get a 5% increase.

He said they aim to eliminate the difficult situation that government employees face when they retire and make it difficult for them to get their pensions, and fight corruption among employees while they are still in government.
