The Government of Uganda has launched an emergency food relief intervention to support communities in the Karamoja sub-region affected by the prolonged dry spell that has disrupted agricultural production and increased food insecurity.
The relief package comprises 9,419,610 kilogrammes of maize flour and dry beans, which will be distributed to 313,987 households across 480 parishes in the nine districts of Karamoja.
The intervention is being coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in partnership with the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Uganda Prisons Service, the Uganda Police Force, and local governments to ensure the food reaches the intended beneficiaries efficiently, transparently, and accountably.
Speaking during the flag-off of the food relief distribution at the NEC headquarters in Bugoloobi, Kampala, Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the people of Karamoja.
“The Government stands with the people of Karamoja and will continue to mobilise the necessary resources to support their recovery and build resilience against future shocks,” she said.
The Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hon. Sam Engola, called upon political, religious and community leaders, civil society organisations, and beneficiaries to support the exercise by promoting transparency, accountability, and peaceful distribution.
The Government also reaffirmed its commitment to long-term interventions aimed at strengthening resilience to recurrent dry spells.
The Office of the Prime Minister will continue to monitor the food security situation in Karamoja while coordinating immediate humanitarian assistance and implementing the recently approved Karamoja Regional Development Plan to protect lives and livelihoods.
