KAMPALA, UGANDA — The office of Gen. Salim Saleh has assured the public that everything possible will be done to support the recovery of detained opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye and explore avenues for dialogue with the government to secure his release from Luzira Prison.

According to Saleh’s office, Besigye’s health condition is reportedly improving following his admission to a hospital in Lubowa, where he is receiving medical attention.

Dusman Oke, the spokesperson for Gen. Salim Saleh, confirmed that a committee had been established to assess Besigye’s situation and explore possible ways of engaging the government over his continued detention.

Oke said Saleh was committed to doing everything possible to ensure that Besigye’s health continues to improve, citing the longstanding personal relationship between the two men.

The relationship reportedly dates back to their time in the Luweero bush war, where they shared experiences that forged a lasting bond.

According to accounts cited in the report, Besigye treated Saleh after he was reportedly shot in 1983, a development believed to have strengthened their personal ties.

The proposed engagement with the government is expected to explore possible avenues for dialogue regarding Besigye’s detention and eventual release.

Besigye was reportedly arrested in Kenya before being transferred to Uganda, where he faces allegations linked to a plot to assassinate President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

His detention has continued to attract public attention, with concerns about his health and calls for a resolution to his legal and political situation.
