The Ministry of Health has today launched the Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) training program in Wakiso District.
Given the geographical size of Wakiso, training will take place at Kyamies Garden in Kayunga Town, Wakiso District, J&M Hotel in Bwebajja and Gayaza Technical & Skills Development Center, expanding the district-wide rollout of the CHEWs programme.

The Kayunga training site will host 128 CHEWs drawn from 64 parishes out of Wakiso District’s 148 parishes.

While addressing the enrolled CHEWs, Technical Advisor, Dr. Meddy Rutayisire has expressed appreciation to the United States Government for supporting the CHEWs programme, the Infectious Disease Institute (IDI) for its continued partnership, and the Wakiso District Local Government for embracing the initiative.

He has urged the trainees to foster a collaborative working relationship with the existing Village Health Teams (VHTs), emphasizing that the two community health cadres are complementary and must work hand in hand to improve health outcomes at the grassroots.

Dr. Rutayisire has also encouraged the trainees to utilize the Ministry of Health’s toll-free line 0800100066 whenever necessary and to stay informed by following the Ministry’s official digital and social media platforms, including TikTok, for timely public health information and updates.
