Nansana, Uganda — Police and fire and rescue services responded to a fire that broke out in the early hours of Monday in Nansana, with preliminary reports indicating that three people may have died while six others survived.
The deceased have been identified by people familiar with the family as Buladi Isabide, Namulondo Annet and Nanyombe Violet. However, police say the bodies were burnt beyond recognition and that the identities have not yet been officially confirmed.
People familiar with the occupants of the premises said Nanyombe Violet was reportedly renting out the property.
Speaking at a press conference at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said investigators are treating the incident as a suspected case of arson.
According to police, information gathered from people at the scene, together with evidence recovered during the initial investigation, points to the possibility that one of the victims deliberately started the fire.
Investigators have also reportedly recovered writings from the scene, although police have not disclosed their contents.
Police further said there were allegations that, shortly before the fire started, the suspected individual pushed some people out of the house and behaved violently.
Authorities have urged members of the public to seek help and report situations that could pose a danger to themselves or others, particularly when they feel unable to control a situation.
Investigations are ongoing as police work to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fire. Authorities said further details will be released once the information has been verified.
