Ugandan comedian and entertainer Yokana Mbuuse, popularly known as Kapere Lufotose, has died after collapsing while visiting his child at Jolibo Junior School in Nansombwe, Nsangi, Wakiso District.

Kapere reportedly collapsed in the presence of his wife on Sunday, November 1, 2026, during the school’s visitation day, which coincided with a graduation ceremony for pupils in the top class. He was rushed to Zamzam Hospital before being referred to Royal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 5:46 p.m.

Police have registered a case of sudden death at Nsangi Police Station as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

Addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, on Monday, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said police had received a report from the director of Jolibo Junior School concerning the incident, which occurred at Kyimbejja, Nansombwe village.

According to preliminary police findings, Mbuuse, an adult male resident of Makindye Lower B, had visited the school to see his child when he suddenly collapsed while in the company of his wife.

Kawala said a postmortem examination would be conducted to establish the actual cause of death. Police also extended condolences to the bereaved family, relatives and friends.

News of Kapere’s death has sparked widespread grief among fans, fellow entertainers and political figures, including National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who paid tribute to the comedian in an emotional message posted on his X account.

Kyagulanyi described Kapere as a close friend, loving husband, gifted entertainer and patriot whose humour and personality touched many lives.

“His parents named him Mbuuse Yokana, the world knew him as Kapere Lufotose and his friends called him Taata Twamp,” Kyagulanyi wrote.

He described the comedian as a sincere and kind-hearted person with an interesting personality and an infectious sense of humour.

Kyagulanyi also praised Kapere for refusing to allow public ridicule over his physical appearance to define him, saying he instead turned his uniqueness into a source of confidence, opportunity and success.

He further described him as a devoted husband who made his wife proud and an entertainer who understood the influence of his talent and chose to use it to serve his country.

“Kapere lived a life of purpose, serving his country in the best way he knew how. He was a patriot, a gentleman, and a man whose infectious humour could light up even the saddest of moments,” he said.

Kyagulanyi extended his condolences to Kapere’s wife, Nakandi, popularly known as Maama Twamp, and their children, praying for strength and comfort for the family.

Born Yokana Mbuuse, Kapere rose to national prominence through his comedy stage persona, Kapere Lufotose, becoming one of the recognisable figures in Uganda’s entertainment industry.

He built his career by turning public attention to his distinctive physical appearance into a source of comedy and professional success. Kapere often said he was proud of his looks because they had earned him fame, friendships and a decent livelihood.

His breakthrough into professional stand-up comedy reportedly came after an encounter with veteran comedian Amooti Omubalanguzi, who offered him an opportunity to perform on stage. Audiences quickly embraced his unique personality and comedic talent.

He later became a prominent member of the Amarula Family comedy group, performing alongside established entertainers Allan Mujuni, popularly known as Amooti, and Nicholas Mpiirwe, widely known as Messe Bontwe.

Beyond stand-up comedy, Kapere also featured in music videos and gained wider recognition after appearing in Bobi Wine’s hit song Mr. Money, in which he portrayed a wealthy and flashy man who used his money and possessions to impress a woman.

His personal life also attracted public interest. He met his wife, Nakandi, during an Amarula Family performance in Jinja, where he reportedly paid her entrance fee. Their relationship later culminated in a church wedding at Miracle Centre Cathedral in Rubaga.

Kapere also went through a period of renewed religious devotion at Pastor Robert Kayanja’s church, which he openly linked to seeking divine intervention when one of his children became seriously ill. He later returned to his former church after the child’s recovery.

Apart from entertainment, Kapere ventured into politics and aligned himself with the National Unity Platform. He reportedly collected nomination forms to contest for a local councillor position in Makindye.

His death marks the loss of a comedian whose distinctive personality, humour and contribution to Uganda’s entertainment industry earned him admiration from audiences and fellow performers.

He is survived by his wife, Nakandi, and their children. Police investigations and a postmortem examination are expected to establish further details surrounding his sudden death.
