Inside PLU Shake-Up: Gen Muhoozi Retains Mwenda, Mawanda, Karugire, Nuwagira.
15/6/2026
The Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced a major restructuring of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), retaining key allies while appointing new leadership in what he described as a refreshed team to advance the group’s agenda ahead of the 2026 political cycle.

PLU, a political movement launched in 2024 to promote patriotism and support President Yoweri Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM), is chaired by Gen. Muhoozi himself.
In the latest changes, Fadhil Twalla has been appointed as the new General Secretary, replacing Hon. Daudi Kabanda, whom Muhoozi praised for serving with distinction over the past three years.
He also directed that a formal handover and takeover ceremony be organised by the National Vice Chairperson, Michael Nuwagira, and instructed all PLU ministers and Members of Parliament to attend.
Despite the reshuffle, Muhoozi retained several prominent figures on the Central Committee, including Michael Nuwagira, Edwin Karugire, MP Michael Mawanda, and journalist Andrew Mwenda.
He noted that the incoming changes are part of a broader strategy to strengthen PLU’s structure and effectiveness, adding that the organisation had already achieved its initial objectives with the previous leadership team.
Muhoozi further stated that PLU’s alliance with the ruling NRM is centered on delivering results to citizens, and urged members serving in Cabinet and Parliament to intensify grassroots engagement and oversight of government programmes.
The announcement sparked active discussion online, with supporters welcoming the changes as a step toward strengthening the “patriotic movement,” while critics described the restructuring as part of broader political realignments ahead of the 2026 elections.
The overhaul comes amid continued consolidation within PLU as it positions itself as a key political mobilization platform within Uganda’s evolving political landscape.
