Uganda is taking a decisive step towards building a cleaner, healthier and more productive nation with the launch of the National Cleaning Days (NCDs) Initiative.
Under the slogan “A Clean Uganda Is Everybody’s Responsibility,” the last Saturday of every month, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., will be dedicated to community cleaning activities across the country.
The initiative, approved by Cabinet, responds to the urgent need to address poor sanitation and environmental degradation, which contribute significantly to preventable diseases.
In Kampala alone, 2,000–2,500 tonnes of solid waste are generated daily, while only about 50–60% is collected and safely disposed of.
The NCDs will bring together Government institutions, Local Governments, cultural & religious institutions, the private sector, civil society, development partners and all persons residing in Uganda to clean our communities, markets, schools, health facilities, places of worship, roads, drainage channels & other public spaces.
The initiative will officially be launched by H.E. the Vice President on behalf of H.E. the President on Saturday, 25 July 2026, at Kiti Zone, Kisenyi III Parish, Kampala Central Division.
During the three-hour cleaning period, unnecessary movement of persons and vehicles will be restricted, while businesses will remain closed, except for essential services and genuine emergencies.
