The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has reinforced police operations in Kazo, Ibanda, Kagadi and Kyankwanzi following concerns over rising cases of murder, livestock theft and crop theft in the affected areas.

IGP Byakagaba, accompanied by the Director of Operations, AIGP Frank Mwesigwa, conducted an operational assessment and held engagements with police officers and commanders in the four districts.

The visit followed concerns raised by political leaders and members of the public over the growing security challenges in the areas.

During the engagements, the IGP met regional, district and sub-county police commanders to assess the policing situation and realign operations towards addressing the prevailing security concerns.

Byakagaba urged police commanders and personnel to adopt proactive policing, promote teamwork and patriotism, and strengthen coordination at all levels.

He also directed officers to make effective use of available anti-crime infrastructure and operational resources, including police canine services, CCTV systems, communication equipment and the police fleet.

As part of efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Sub-County Policing Model (SCPM), the IGP deployed additional police personnel and motorcycles to the affected districts.

However, he cautioned officers against treating the SCPM as a policy on paper, urging them to fully understand the model and put it into practical use within their respective areas of responsibility.

The IGP further called on police officers to work closely with communities, improve information-sharing and strengthen public confidence in the police response to crime.

He said effective community engagement and timely sharing of information would be critical in preventing crime and improving security in the affected areas.

The operational assessments are part of efforts by the police leadership to strengthen policing and improve the response to security concerns across the country.
