Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, on Wednesday declared that he did not need bribes from contractors and urged them to report directly to him any ministry official soliciting kickbacks, as the government seeks to restore confidence in a sector long plagued by corruption, delayed projects and cost overruns.

Speaking during a meeting with contractors undertaking the construction and rehabilitation of national roads across the country, Byamukama said the engagement was intended to address project progress, outstanding contractual obligations and bottlenecks slowing infrastructure delivery.
Help us to help you,” the minister appealed, noting that while contractors bear responsibility for delivering projects, the ministry’s role is to provide oversight, inspections and support to ensure timely completion.
The Minister does not need payment or a bribe. I have an open-door policy — you can reach me on WhatsApp or text at any time,” Byamukama said. “Report directly to me any ministry official who asks you for a bribe.”
