IGANGA – Police arrested several individuals in the Greater Iganga sub-region for not following the government’s order to take part in National Cleaning Day.
ASP Michael Kasadha, the spokesperson for Busoga East Police, stated that police collaborated with other security agencies to make sure everyone participated in the clean-up effort throughout the area.
“We also joined in by cleaning police barracks and nearby streets. The event was mostly peaceful, though a few people chose not to participate. Some travelers were asked to join in, and those who refused were taken into custody,” Kasadha explained.
He mentioned that police would provide more information later about those who were arrested and what actions would be taken against them.
Local leaders such as Iganga District Woman MP Mariam Seif, NRM District Chairperson Hajji Abubaker Walubi, Resident District Commissioners, district officials, and the Iganga Municipal technical team led by Town Clerk Edith Turyasasira actively participated in the event.
Mariam Seif encouraged residents to incorporate cleanliness into their daily lives instead of seeing it as a one-time activity.
“A clean environment leads to better health. I urge everyone in Iganga to keep their homes and communities tidy so our district stays healthy and appealing,” she said.
Hajji Walubi praised the National Cleaning Day initiative for promoting public responsibility, caring for the environment, and involving the community.
The nationwide event took place from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., causing some traffic delays along parts of the Jinja–Malaba Highway as vehicles were temporarily stopped to allow for clean-up efforts.
Many residents, traders, and students who participated expressed hope that this initiative will become a regular practice to enhance sanitation and public health.
