Hoima City to Host National Cleanup as Authorities Strengthen Waste Management and Security Measures
KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Ugandan government has called on citizens across the country to participate in the third National Cleaning Day scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The exercise follows the first two National Cleaning Days held on July 25 and August 29, respectively. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja expressed appreciation to government officials, security agencies, local leaders, truck drivers, and contractors for their support in the previous exercises.
Hoima City, which has been designated to host AFCON 2026, will serve as the national cleanup site, while cleaning activities will be conducted across the country, including cities, districts, municipalities, town councils, sub-counties, parishes, and villages.
The government has directed local authorities to ensure the availability of cleaning materials, waste collection trucks, fuel, and personnel. Citizens have been urged to sort waste at the source, use authorized waste collectors, and refrain from dumping rubbish along roadsides, in drainage channels, and other unauthorized areas.
During the cleaning period, movement of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians will be restricted, with exceptions for essential services and authorized individuals, including medical workers, security personnel, tourists, garbage collection teams, and people undertaking scheduled international travel with the required documentation.
Police Deputy Spokesperson SSP Diana Nadawula said security supervision and deployment would be enhanced during the upcoming exercise following the fatal shooting of boda boda rider Ronald Juuko Kizito during a previous cleaning operation.
According to Nadawula, the officer implicated in the incident was arrested, appeared before court, and was remanded to Luzira Prison. The next hearing is scheduled for October 6, 2026.
She urged the public to comply with security instructions, stop when directed by officers, and present the necessary documentation if they qualify for an exemption. She added that additional commanders would be deployed, particularly in highly populated areas, to improve coordination and prevent confrontations.
Amos Lugoloobi highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and tourists to Uganda.
He said a clean country can help promote foreign exchange earnings, knowledge and skills transfer, and the introduction of new technologies. Lugolombi welcomed the initiative and encouraged Ugandans to take pride in their surroundings and make cleanliness a daily responsibility.
The government has emphasized that National Cleaning Day is not intended to replace everyday cleaning practices. Instead, it seeks to promote sustainable waste management, public health, and a cleaner environment across the country.
Authorities have urged all leaders, institutions, businesses, and communities to prepare for the exercise and work together to ensure its success.
