KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda Security Printing Company (USPC) is set to begin local production of the country’s sensitive security documents as it completes the establishment of a state-of-the-art printing facility in Entebbe.
Speaking at the NIRA My Identity Expo and Symposium at Kololo, USPC Project Manager Haji Abdul Subuga said the company was established through a joint venture involving German company Veridos to centralise the production of Uganda’s security-related documents.
USPC has already supplied the Ministry of Internal Affairs with more than 24 million blank national identity cards and over 500,000 blank passport booklets, while also supporting NIRA with the production of birth and death certificates.
The company is also mandated to produce other sensitive documents, including ballot papers and academic certificates, with the aim of reducing forgery and ensuring greater security and control over critical national documents.
Subuga said construction of the USPC factory in Entebbe has been completed, with the company now undertaking the procurement and installation of specialised printing equipment.
He said the facility is expected to become operational within the next one and a half years, allowing Uganda to produce sensitive documents locally rather than outsourcing their production abroad.
According to Subuga, the project is also intended to create employment opportunities and build the capacity of Ugandans in specialised security printing.
He added that USPC plans to use the facility to serve markets beyond Uganda, noting that its large production capacity will require the company to seek business from other African countries.
“We must do it here in Uganda. You don’t need to go and print our sensitive documents outside the country,” Subuga said.
USPC says the Entebbe facility is expected to become one of Africa’s leading security-printing plants once fully operational.
