KAMPALA, Uganda — Media personality Frank Gashumba has challenged pastors, prophets and apostles who claim to possess divine healing powers to demonstrate their abilities on critically ill patients in hospital intensive care units (ICUs), offering Shs500 million to anyone who meets the challenge.

Speaking on Radio 4’ Entuugga programme on Monday, Gashumba reportedly said the money could be held by a trusted lawyer as he challenged religious leaders to conduct the proposed test at Mulago National Referral Hospital, Nsambya Hospital or Lubaga Hospital.

“No pastor heals people. Doctors heal people,” Gashumba argued, questioning why some religious leaders who claim to perform miracles seek medical treatment when they fall ill or travel abroad for specialised care.

He insisted that his offer was serious, challenging interested religious leaders to accept the proposed conditions and demonstrate their claimed healing abilities before witnesses.

However, details on how the challenge would be conducted, how successful healing would be independently verified and whether the money has been deposited remain unconfirmed.

Gashumba’s remarks have reignited debate in Uganda over faith healing, religious accountability and the credibility of claims of miraculous recoveries.

While prayer remains an important source of spiritual support for many believers, claims of supernatural healing have attracted scrutiny, particularly where vulnerable people may be encouraged to rely on unverified promises of recovery or pay money for purported miracles.

Gashumba has also argued that religious leaders should be open to criticism and held accountable for their actions, just like other members of society.

The challenge comes amid broader public discussions about the commercialisation of religion and the responsibility of religious leaders towards their followers.

Whether any pastor, prophet or apostle will take up the Shs500 million challenge remains to be seen.
