Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth has defended the planned six-month military training for Senior Six leavers, saying the programme is consistent with the Constitution of Uganda.

Oboth-Oboth said those opposed to the proposed training at Kyankwanzi should seek an amendment to Article 17(2) of the Constitution, which provides for able-bodied citizens to undergo military training when called upon.

The Speaker’s remarks come amid concerns over the planned military training for Senior Six leavers, with questions being raised about its necessity and implications for the students.

Oboth-Oboth maintained that the constitutional provision requires citizens who are able-bodied to undergo military training when called upon, suggesting that those who disagree with the arrangement should pursue constitutional reforms rather than oppose the programme under the existing law.

The proposed six-month training is expected to take place at Kyankwanzi, although further details about its implementation have yet to be provided.
