Members of Parliament from the Teso sub-region have been contributing money through their WhatsApp group to help former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among buy food after the freezing of her bank accounts left her unable to access funds for basic household needs, Chimp Corps report.
Several MPs from the region, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said lawmakers had stepped in to support Among financially as investigations into Parliament’s financial management continue.
Yes, the situation is bad for Among. We raise money for her food and other household necessities,” one MP from Teso said.
Among always supported our initiatives and we can’t let her down.
Another legislator said the fundraising is coordinated informally through the Teso Parliamentary Group’s WhatsApp platform whenever assistance is needed.
It is really true that Among’s main problem now is food. She cannot access her accounts to buy food. So we chip in with our resources; it’s strange but true,” the MP said.
The female lawmaker emphasized: “She receives guests, relatives and has a family to feed. It’s really a tough moment for her.”
Sources familiar with the arrangement said food is also occasionally transported from Among’s home district of Bukedea to supplement supplies at her residence.
ChimpReports understands the financial strain has been compounded by restrictions reportedly placed on bank accounts belonging to Among’s husband, Budiope East MP Moses Magogo.
The issue was raised last week during a meeting between the Paramount Chief of the Iteso Cultural Union, Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Etomeileng Emolot, and Gen. Salim Saleh at the latter’s residence in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District.
During the meeting, the Emorimor appealed to Saleh to help secure the release of Among’s frozen bank accounts.
These bank accounts were frozen when her homes in Nakasero and Kigo were raided by security forces,” the Emorimor said.

Responding, Saleh said he would consult and look into the matter.
“You know I am not a politician. I don’t tell lies like your politicians. That’s why I failed in politics,” Saleh said.

Among has been under investigation following searches conducted by security agencies at her residences in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea as part of a wider probe into the management of Parliament.
Several senior parliamentary officials have since been charged with offences including embezzlement, money laundering and causing financial loss.
