Police in the Kampala Metropolitan East and Mukono areas have arrested 40 suspects and recovered 16 suspected stolen motorcycles in a series of intelligence-led operations targeting criminal hideouts and black spots.

The coordinated operations were carried out in Kireka, Bweyogerere and Bukerere, focusing on gangs believed to be behind motorcycle thefts, narcotic substance abuse and street robberies.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, officers in Kireka Zone C, Namugongo Division in Kiira Municipality raided a suspected illegal motorcycle reassembly garage where stolen motorcycles were allegedly being dismantled and reassembled.

Twelve male suspects were arrested and 16 motorcycles, whose ownership and status are under verification, were recovered and taken to Jinja Road Police Station for further investigations.

Additional sweeps in Wellspring, Kakajjo and Kazinga Hassan Trabi zones in Kira Division, as well as Bukerere Village and surrounding areas in Goma Division, Mukono District, led to the arrest of 28 more suspects, including three women, and the seizure of exhibits of suspected narcotics.

All suspects remain in custody and will be processed, as police pledged to sustain operations aimed at reducing crime, recovering stolen property and enhancing public safety.
