Ssemujju Accuses Bobi Wine of Prioritizing Popularity Over NUP Structure.

15/6/2026

Former Kira Municipality MP and political commentator Ssemujju Nganda has criticized the leadership style of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine, accusing him of focusing more on personal popularity than building a strong party institution.

Speaking during a live discussion on NBS Television’s FaceOff, Ssemujju argued that NUP risks becoming vulnerable during Bobi Wine’s absences abroad, saying the party appears heavily centered on its leader rather than on a strong internal structure.

He contrasted this with the leadership approach of former opposition leader Kizza Besigye, whom he praised for promoting a more inclusive and institution-based political style.

According to Ssemujju, this difference raises concerns about whether NUP has developed sufficient internal systems to function effectively without its principal figure. He further questioned Bobi Wine’s capacity to manage either a political party or national leadership, although he emphasized that his remarks were not personal attacks.

The comments come at a time of continued debate within Uganda’s opposition politics following the contested January elections, with analysts noting growing tensions over personality-driven politics versus institution-building within opposition parties.

Reactions to Ssemujju’s remarks have remained divided, reflecting ongoing disagreements about leadership models and the future direction of Uganda’s opposition landscape.
